Valley Malt and Ground Up are grain processing businesses in Holyoke MA making malt for craft breweries and stone milled flour for bakers in the Northeast. Sourcing 100% of their grains from Northeast farms. As a growing food manufacturing company, we are seeking a full time person to fulfill production work needed in both malting and milling production. This is an opportunity for a person with interest in local food and sustainable agriculture to gain hands-on experience and gain skills in production and food processing. 

This is a split position between both our malt house and our mill. The hours are flexible within a 9am - 6pm, eight hour shift, with the mill shift running until 6pm. Send resume to jobs@valleymalt.com

Valley Malt: Milling & Packaging

  • Hours

    • Typically this will be 2-3 days per week between the hours of 9am-5pm. Schedule is determined the week prior. Will be coordinated to not overlap with Miller Duties 

  • Responsibilities and Duties: 

    • Packaging malt in 50 and 2000 pound bags to fulfill customer orders, which requires the process of weighing, milling, bagging, carrying, stitching, and stacking of 50 lb bags of malt and grains.

    • Operating material handling equipment, like augers, roller mill, hammer mill, forklift and pallet jack. 

    • Pull together customer orders on time and accurately.

    • Coordinating outgoing shipments of malt, working with external shipping companies to arrange product pick ups and entering tracking information into our shipping manifest.

    • Pest management, monitoring activity and working closely with external pest control.

    • Equipment maintenance, maintaining the packaging equipment, raising repair issues to the Director of Operations to be acted on.

  • Physical Demands: This job requires constant lifting and moving of 50 lb bags. Occasional scooping of grains, climbing, stooping, and moving in and out of a forklift. Pushing and pulling of 2000 lb pallets. Stacking pallets of 50 pound bags manually.

    Ground Up - Miller

  • Hours: 3-4 days per week, flexible 3pm-6pm shift.

  • Responsibilities and Duties 

    • This includes the critical steps of loading the mill hopper, bagging and packaging flour based on the daily schedule and recording weights, production amounts, and labeling accurately.

    • Miller will also package grains for milling into super sacks using a forklift.

    • Downloading orders via our E-Commerce platforms.

    • Coordinating outgoing shipments of flour, for both retail and wholesale customers. Working with external shipping companies to arrange pick ups and entering tracking information into our shipping manifest.

  • Physical Demands This job requires constant standing and moving around, climbing ladders, scooping grain and flour often, lifting and carrying 50 lb bags often, pushing/pulling 1 ton pallets, occasional reaching, lifting, carrying, stooping. Stacking pallets of 50 pound bags manually.

Success Criteria:

  • Able to self assign duties for the month, week, and day to complete production that is scheduled. 

  • Clean and tidy mindset, always keeping the work areas clean at the end of a shift and documenting work and cleaning performed. 

  • Able to work alone but good at communicating with co-workers to keep others informed of your work.

  • Prioritizing customer satisfaction as well as quality, consistency, and neatness of product shipping out. Ability to securely wrap a pallet for shipment.

  • Knowledge of system intricacies and safety protocols. Must always wear eye, ear protection and a respirator. 

  • Fork truck driver experience is preferred, but we will train you and get you certified.

Qualifications

High School Diploma (minimum), Ability to perform physical labor constantly: lifting 50 lb. bags, climbing ladder with 35 lb buckets, ability to effectively work with limited supervision, ability to interface with a computer, ability to be trained to operate.

Hours: M-F between 9am-6pm, flexible 8 hour shift.

Pay Rate: $20-$23 per hour
